Control positioning axes using IO-Link

halstrup-walcher, a pioneer in the area of compatibility with different field buses, has taken this a step further and has now become the first supplier of decentralised actuators also to provide positioning drives with an IO-Link interface.

Positioning systems for automated format changeover in machines

Until now, IO-Link has been used predominantly by sensor manufacturers. But why should it not be used for adjusting machinery axes as well? After all, this peer-to-peer connection can also be used to control actuators. Gateways in a different position can then be used for conversion to any customer-specific field bus. The ability to use the same communication (IO-Link) on the level of the sensor and actuator in every version of a machine reduces complexity and thus simplifies setup and saves money.

The 3-series range of positioning systems offers optimum support for fast, precision positioning tasks using IO-Link. The following details will be of interest to practical engineers:

  • The PSE / PSS / PSW positioning system can be connected with IO-Link using just one standardised, unshielded M12 cable. The instrument uses the same cable for both the power supply and data transmission.
  • The so-called "time stamp" process is supported. This guarantees that the format changeover is always started at the desired time and the control module can transmit the corresponding run commands in good time – the PSE / PSS / PSW positioning system with IO-Link is then even able to start when the time stamp has been reached. This is very useful, especially for synchronising the start of format changeover processes.

Positioning systems from halstrup-walcher are intelligent drives with an integrated motor, gearbox, bus communication and absolute encoder. They automatically move guide rails, tools or inspection cameras to the new position required for the new format in the machine process. These extremely compact small drives are available in a very extensive range of modular systems:

    • Torques from 1 to 25 Nm
  • Selection of IP protection classes: IP54, IP65, IP68
  •  Selection of on-board bus communication protocols: PROFIBUS PD, PROFINET, CANopen, EtherNet/IP, Modbus RTU, Sercos, EtherCAT, DeviceNet, POWERLINK and IO-Link

The key advantage:

When you change the IP protection class or the bus communication, all the relevant connection dimensions remain the same. This enables the machine builder to "convert" an existing machine to the customer's wishes extremely quickly.
